Information about class 4 laser therapy (or photobiomodulation) is circulating in conferences, journals, and materials distributed by laser therapy manufacturers, making it difficult to distinguish which data points are the most valuable and relevant.
When considering a class 4 system, the three main variables that are most critical for the beneficial effects of laser therapy are wavelength, dose, and power.
1.Wavelength
There is a delicate balance between wavelength, tissue absorption of that wavelength, and the resulting therapeutic effect.
Melanin, fur, hair, cell fluid and muscle all have different absorption factors of light at different wavelengths. The goal is to find a wavelength that is most effective for the desired target tissue.
The ideal wavelength for skin diseases is in the range of 670nm. For deeper diseases, the ideal penetration range requires 800nm to 900nm to ensure energy reaches the target tissue. Specifically, wavelengths around 808nm have been proven to penetrate tissues and even bones
2. Dose
Like pharmaceuticals, dosage also has an impact on laser therapy. If the dosage is too small, it will have no effect at all. If the dosage is too high, there is a risk of damaging cells or tissues. The World Association for Laser Therapy (WALT) has defined ideal dose parameters to achieve the desired therapeutic effect, and is currently undergoing a rigorous process to update these parameters to reflect the latest advances in research.
3. Power
The main benefit of higher power is faster dose delivery. Dose is key, and power will impact the speed of that dose’s delivery.

4. Emission

CLASS 4 LASER THERAPY BENEFITS
By applying stimulation to the specific wavelengths that affect the cell receptors inside our body, laser therapy can modify the effects of injured tissues. As such, it can reduce the overall duration of inflammation, while enhancing the body’s healing and repair capabilities. Here are just a few results that have been observed in various clinical studies as a result of laser therapy:
Increased Vasodilation
Increased Collagen Production
Improved Cell Metabolism
Increased Lymphatic Response
Increased Microcirculation
Increased Nerve Regeneration
Higher Pain Threshold
Increased Bone and Tissue Repair
Improved Enzyme Response
Reduced Edema Magnitude
Reduced Duration of Inflammation
